ABOUT ROBERT

Previously an actor & singer for over a decade, I had developed what I considered to be a strong physical awareness through my dance, acting and singing training at drama school, and the experience of my professional life. As well as learning relaxation and breathing techniques, I had been practising general hatha yoga irregularly for a number of years and dabbled in Tai Chi. Swimming, gym and running were part of a 5 times a week exercise regime. I thought I was as fit as I could be.

Then I attended my first ashtanga class.

After I had recovered my breath, so many parts of me were aching and complaining that I became acutely aware that my physical fitness was merely superficial.

Yoga changed and continues to change that, enhancing every aspect of my life - physically, mentally and, I venture to say, spiritually.

I consider myself to be an average practitioner - I started relatively late, with stiff hips, various injuries from sports and working activities, and typically a sometimes indulgent lifestyle and diet. Patience and practice continues to improve flexibility, and together with a change of diet and habits, the symptoms of the various conditions have been arrested and reversed.

To be effective, a teacher must also be a student, learning and broadening their experience. The best part of this takes place on the mat.

I have trained and attended workshops with a variety of well-known teachers including David Swenson, Ann-Marie Newland, David Sye and Stewart Gilchrist, local teachers such as Amanda Latchmore, Swami Vishwamandala, Laura Bissell, Rob Leadley and Indra Singh, studying styles such as Ashtanga, 'Power' yoga, Vinyasa Flow, Iyengar, Sivananda, Sun Power and 'Hot' yoga (based on Bikram and the Barkan Method).

My main teaching areas are Ashtanga, Vinyasa Flow, Sun Power and 'Hot' yoga, but I also regularly teach more general (and gentle) hatha yoga classes for beginners, incorporating classical yoga asanas, breathing and meditation techniques.

Apart from regular classes at Sweaty Betty, Nuffield Health Centre, The Hydro and other venues, I periodically teach at other local private and public health centres in and around Harrogate, including the Academy, Nidderdale and Rossett and I am on the Harrogate Borough Council list of approved teachers for their fitness centres.

I have regular 'one to one' students of all ages. These sessions greatly benefit a wide range of people, with or without yoga experience, and with different levels of health and fitness.

I have also taught students at local schools from year 10 upwards.

I am an assistant to the renowned teacher trainer Ann-Marie Newland of Sun Power Yoga.

My students can all be assured of receiving down to earth guidance, advice and tuition relevant to their individual physical and mental state, from someone who is aware from personal experience just how practical and vital yoga is to our modern way of life.
