Like most high impact exercise, running puts great strain on the body, invariably causing mid- and long-term damage for those for whom it is a major part of their exercise regime. Most of my students whose exercise commitments are above average – runners, cyclists, climbers, squash players etc. – come to yoga because they have back or joint pain, recurring injuries, or can simply feel their bodies tightening up to the extent that the exercise they indulge in to get them ‘fit’ is actually working against them.
